Let’s sing all the carols in the book!

2 min read

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the ever-popular Carols For Choirs music book, Reading Bach Choir held a special concert where they sang all 50 carols from the first edition.

The event, held at Caversham Heights Methodist Church on Saturday, December 3, turned out to be a real marathon carol-sing that raised a terrific £500 for the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity.

“Anyone who has ever sung in a choir at Christmas time will probably know the Carols for Choirs series,” explains a spokesperson from the choir.

“The first one was published 50 years ago and contains 50 carols.

“There was a workshop in the morning for those who were interested in rehearsing some of the lesser-known items and the a marathon sing in the afternoon, designed to sing every carol in the book.

“The Minster boy’s choir came along to sing three items and there were two other small groups who added to the variety and helped to give everyone else a brief rest.

“Tea and mince pies were consumed, old friends made contact again.”

The music was directed by the choir’s own Matthew Hamilton and was accompanied by Chris Cipkin on organ and piano.

• The Reading Bach Choir are performing the Rachmaninov Vespers in Goring on Saturday, February 4and at the Minster church in Reading on Saturday, February 11.
