The First Stop Bus aims to ease the burden on underpressure A&E departments while also providing support and help to the Street Pastors who patrol Reading at weekends.

As well as providing first aid treatment, the bus is an information centre and offers a place of refuge and safety for revellers who need a bit of a hand.

It launched on the weekend before Christmas, and is now parked in Hosier Street, Reading on Friday and Saturdays between 9pm and 4am.

It is now looking for volunteers to help with its work. Full training is provided and volunteers will work with the emergency serices to help people in Reading during its busy night life economy.

Organisers say that volunteers will be able to develop new skills and gain valuable work experience through the role.

Speaking at the launch, Reading FC Chairman Sir John Madejski said: “Having the facilities right in the heart in Reading is very, very good indeed. This is such a clever idea – it’s excellent!”
