ReadiFood’s urgent search for a new home: latest

Reading’s Foodbank has found a new short-term home – but the hunt is still on to find a permanent solution.

Last week, we exclusively revealed that ReadiFood needs to leave its warehouse by the end of November.

The charity, which each week distributes more than 100 food parcels to families in the Reading area, is looking for a 3,000sq ft space which it can call its home.

For the past two years, it has been working from a donated warehouse space off Basingstoke Road but now the charity has to find new space, just as it comes to its busiest period of the year.

Malcolm Peirce, director of ReadiFood, said: “Our current landlords have in effect given us £40,000 per year over the past two years – that’s amazing really.”

But the warehouse space was always on the proviso that once a paying tenant came along they would have to leave and that’s exactly what’s happening.

Malcolm added: “Our short-term fix is underway and there’s just the challenge of getting out of the old and into the new within three weeks.”

But the charity is hoping that it can find somewhere that it can call its home.

A warehouse space that’s around 3,000sq ft will cost around £40,000 a year to rent and that means that ReadiFood needs to find a very generous landlord or people willing to donate the space.

“In the long term, our only real solution is to pay rent,” Malcolm added. “We need to find ongoing sponsors who can help us meet this figure.”

ReadiFood is a charity and relies on donations of food, time and money to sustain its services.
