The 5th Tilehurst Girl Guides have developed and launched an initiative to tackle the prevalence of loan shark companies, an initiative which has been so successful that Girl Guiding UK have taken it on board and launched it as a national campaign. This now forms part of the national programme for Guiding and girls can now work towards gaining a special badge which has been designed by 5th Tilehurst Girl Guides.
A stall in Broad Street was in place earlier today where volunteers handed out leaflets and advice cards to passers-by to raise awareness of loan shark businesses in order to try and combat the ever-increasing problem.
Guide Leader, Kim Jakubiszyn, said: “This is about increasing financial awareness, letting the Guides know what debt is, what APR is, what loans and interest is and generally helping instill skills for life. This isn’t technically “Guiding” as it’s about citzenship too. We’re proud to have won two national awards due to this campaign and we’re not stopping there. This is an initiative which will continually evolve, and we will evolve along with it.”
Kim added: “We are going to be taking the next step in helping the Guides open their own savings scheme to further raise money awareness and making informed decisions about money.”
