The Queen’s speech was shown on a big screen as part of a Christmas Day lunch for people in Caversham who would otherwise have been on their own for the big day.

Members of Grace Church held the dinner for nearly 30 people at its Peppard Road base and all enjoyed a traditional Christmas dinner as well as fun and games.

Church members led carol singing around the piano, while guests could tackle a puzzling quiz before watching the annual Christmas message from the Queen, which was projected onto a screen.

Andrew Mathewson, one of the organisers of the day, was delighted with how it went, explaining that the guests had been grateful for the hospitality. He explained that one had said that they had been dreading Christmas, but the lunch had been great, while another said that they event was “terrific”.

A couple, when asked, said, “You couldn’t have done anything better!”

Andrew said: “Nearly all were single people but the guests also included an elderly couple and a single mum and her three children. All had the full Christmas meal: a choice of homemade soups, roast turkey with all the trimmings, followed by Christmas pud and a variety of alternatives.

“I expect the church will put on another lunch next Christmas – which will be the third year in succession.”
