There was some wheely good fun going on in Sunninghill on New Year’s Day as the village turned out for the annual fancy dress wheelbarrow races. 2015 marked the 10th anniversary of the fun event which sees teams race wheelbarrows up and down the High Street while raising money for good causes.

Teams dressed up as characters from The Simpsons, Frozen and superheroes for the fun event that blew away New Year’s Day hangovers while helping charity.

Alan Rawlinson, President of the Rotary Club of Ascot said: “The event is a collaboration between the Rotary Club of Ascot and the local community. It’s always fun and everyone in the community gets involved.

“We hope to raise about £6,000 and the money will be given to the Ascot Day Centre that looks after local elderly people.”

Fourteen teams took part in the event each attired in fancy dress. One member of each team had to sit in a wheelbarrow and be pushed around the course. An additional obstacle to the race was that the teams had to stop at each pub in the village and take a drink before continuing.

David Mear, Rotarian and one of the races organisers said: “It’s been a great event, the weather has been good for us and about 400 people watched the race.”
