Reading to get new smaller waste collection trucks

Reading’s newest trucks are rubbish – and that’s official. The Council has ordered 13 new waste collection vehicles and they are smaller than the ones they’re replacing, making them better for Reading’s narrow streets.

To save even more money, Reading Borough Council says that it ordered white trucks as they were the cheapest option. They also comply with the latest European diesel emissions legislation (Euro 6) and will work towards the Council’s 50% carbon reduction target by 2020. It says that it has already reached one-third in just five years.

The waste collection trucks had been ordered because the old fleet had been in use for 10 years and reached the end of their working life. Being narrower, the new trucks will be better placed to manoeuvre around the town’s narrow, terraced streets.

Each of the vehicles can carry approximately 11 tonnes of waste and weigh in at 26 tonnes when fully loaded.

Cllr Liz Terry, Reading Borough Council’s Lead Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “Waste collection vehicles have a lifespan of eight to 10 years on average. This new fleet replaces the old vehicles, which were at the end of their working life, and will be used to collect waste and recycling from people’s doorsteps for the next 10 years.

“As well as having a 50% carbon reduction target by 2020, Reading wants to achieve a 50% recycling target by 2020.

“Last month the Council announced a new a new five-year Waste Minimisation Strategy to cut down on waste being sent to landfill and drive up recycling rates.

“Central to the strategy is communicating more effectively with residents about the importance of recycling, and putting key messages on the new fleet is just one small way we can help to spread that message.”
