The events of the first Christmas will be recreated in a free festive display next month.
The Aldermaston Nativity – now in its 55th year – will retell the famous York Nativity Play over four nights. It runs from Thursday, December 8 to Saturday, December 11. All tickets are free, but they must be booked in advance. The play will be held in the 12th century church of St Mary the Virgin, in Aldermaston. It uses the 14th century York Nativity texts and accompanying the action will be an a capella choir singing 14th and 15th century songs. “You can share the age-old story by joining the players who are all from the local community,” says a spokesperson for the Nativity. “They perform in sumptuous medieval costumes in shades of red, blue and gold to an accompanying choir who sing from the bell tower of the church, the whole production is a synthesis of light and colour with the text of the play adapted from one of the great works of English literature, the York Mystery Cycle.”The play will be performed at 8pm on Thursday and Friday and at 7pm on Saturday and Sunday.
