The Thames Valley’s only magazine devoted to good news has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award.
Xn – Excellent News – is one of five websites nominated for the Innovative Use of New Media in Outreach category for the Christian New Media Awards 2014.
The awards are given to celebrate and encourage excellence in Christian engagement online. The organisers’ aim is to focus our attention on those people and projects that can serve as examples of best practice for the benefit of the Church.
Xn was launched in January 2012 as both a print and web news magazine for Reading, Wokingham, Bracknell and surrounding areas. Each month, 15,000 magazines are printed and distributed to more than 180 churches, schools, shopping centres, doctors’ surgeries, waiting rooms and hairdressers. The printed magazine is supplemented with a regularly updated website that features breaking news and the best of the magazine.
Editor Phil Creighton said: “We’re delighted to be recognised by the New Media Awards. We’re been working incredibly hard since we launched to share good news with each other and the wider world.
“As a community magazine, we work hard to create an inspiring, informative and encouraging read. As a group of Christians working together to create Xn, we work hard at showcasing what’s happening in our communities.
“We’re delighted with the response from our readers and we’re over the moon that our efforts are now being recognised on the national stage.”
The shortlist announced today (Monday, September 22) will be whittled down to a smaller list of finalists, who will be announced in early October. The winner will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony, to be held as part of the Christian New Media Conference at The Brewery in London on Saturday, November 1.
“We’ve been shortlisted against four exceptional websites,” Phil added. “We’re flattered to be in such brilliant company.”
The shortlist:
40acts – a project that encourages people to live generously for 40 days
More Than Gold 2014 – support for churches engaging with the Commonwealth games
Sheffield Media Hub – a resource to connect churches with the media by providing press releases and experts to comment
The Sabbath Sofa – a Facebook community to inspire London to take a day of rest in the week
