A mock-up of what the new newspaper for Wokingham could look like
Wokingham Borough is to get a new printed newspaper next year – plans are being made for the publication to make its debut in 2015.
The news follows the closure last week of The Wokingham Times, which has served the Borough for more than 100 years.
The new newspaper has a working title of the Wokingham Independent and will be produced to the same high standards as the Wokingham Times.
Full details are still being finalised, including a launch date, but with the loss of the town’s much-loved paper, the team planning the new venture want to reassure the Wokingham public that their reading habits will continue.
The newspaper will be produced by an independent company, Xn Media. It already produces a high-quality glossy monthly community magazine for the area called Xn. It will be edited by Phil Creighton – editor of Xn and a former features editor of The Wokingham Times.
He said: “Wokingham is a wonderful town with a host of impressive community events that bring people together. For it not to have its very own newspaper is unthinkable.
“We’ve spoken to a lot of people and they are distraught at the closure of the Wokingham Times, so it’s a pleasure to step in.
“Our plans will not be revolutionary. It will not be new and improved. It will not be chasing digital clicks by producing listicles and online quizzes Instead, we promise a right riveting read that helps bring the community together and hold the powers that be to account.
“We’ll announce more plans in January, but we want to reassure people ahead of Christmas that something exciting is in the works.”
