Annual short playwriting contest once more graces the Progress Theatre stage.
Progress Theatre presents The 9th Annual WriteFest on the 15th-18th October 2014. Each year Progress Theatre produces and performs a mixed programme of original creative works from both budding and experienced writers from Reading and the immediate area in a celebration of local writing and theatrical talent.
This year over 55 plays were submitted by local writers before being read and reviewed by the judging panel.
From these entries, seven excellent short plays have been selected to be seen on stage for the first time, produced by teams of directors and actors, the majority of whom are either new to Progress Theatre or to the discipline itself.
Producer Emily Goode, and Rebecca Gibbs are at the helm after last year’s success: “Each year we’re impressed by the quality of submissions to WriteFest – it gets harder and harder to make a selection for the show.” says Emily.
“From the feedback to the authors who’ve submitted, to the mentors we assign to the directors, the whole show is about bringing something new to everyone, audiences included.”
Progress Theatre is pleased to announce that the entries selected to be a part of this year’s WriteFest are as follows:
- Don’t Leave Me Alone by Paul Houghton: Steve decides to finally introduce his new girlfriend to his housemate James – with disastrous yet hilarious results.
- Now by Luke Hereford: A prostitute and a movie producer come to terms with their relationship.
- Revenge is a Dish Best Taken with Honey by William Irvine: Retired teacher Wendy finally gets her own back on former pupil Clinton
- The Deep Blue by Emily Goode: The connection between Jonathan and a home for sale is a lot stronger than at first glance.
- The Flood by Kathy Reid: The bond between a mother and son is strained as he is sent off to war.
- Yawn by Paul Houghton: Two new fathers find they have many things in common – especially their lack of sleep…
