Pub FC blaze to victory

The Pub FC, winners of the John Lusted Cup

The Pub FC were victors in the John Lusted Cup Final played at Scours Lane on Sunday May 11 with a blazing 5-1 win over Whitley Panthers.

The game started off with Panthers having all the momentum, but some stalwart defending from The Pub meant the scores remained level. Thirty minutes in, however, Mitchel Cooper caught Panthers on the break after some great hold up play from Steven Campbell, clinching the first goal and making it 1 – 0 to The Pub.

Campbell popped back up with a goal of his own five minutes later when a handling error from the ‘keeper left him with an open goal to slot the ball home. The Pub then went on to press a shaken Panthers side and resulted in a third goal. A 25-yard deflected effort from Richie Dow came just before the half time whistle.

The Pub got straight down to business at the start of the second half, dominating the game and having the lions’ share of the possession – until they were hit on the break with a superb through-ball ending in a Panthers goal. Two more goals came from The Pub with Campbell and Cooper both adding another to goal to each of their tallies; Campbell forced a keeper error with his effort from 6 yards and Cooper curled one in from the byline with some assistance from the wind.

This 5 -1 victory was the second cup win of the year for The Pub, who in their first season have won the John Lusted Cup, The Berks & Bucks Trophy and finished third in the league.

The Pub are the football team from The Sun Inn, Castle Street, Reading, which, with its new owners, is integrating as much as it can into the local community. Now proud to host a football team, two darts teams and two pool teams, the hostelry regularly hosts events in aid of local charities.

Brent Guiblin, Bar Manager at The Sun Inn and plays for The Pub FC said: “We have had an amazing season; there were a few hiccups along the way but we rallied and came out with 2 pieces of silverware. Being a part of a great team and a community pub means we really get involved in helping Reading. A great example of this was the Red Dress run the football team did a couple of months back where we ran 7 miles around Reading in dresses and raised over £500 for the Alexander Devine Trust who are looking to build a Berkshire based children’s hospice.”
